KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicted thundershowers for Karachi on Saturday as various parts of the city saw rain in the morning.

The agency also said that thundershowers will occur today, June 8, and tomorrow, June 9, in its daily forecast report. According to the PMD, the air is 79% humid.

Barrister Murtaza Wahab, the mayor of Karachi, declared a rain emergency in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation on Friday due to the rain.

All relevant KMC departments will be open around-the-clock, including on holidays.

In the meanwhile, it has been ordered for the leaders of all departments involved in rain situations to be present in the offices with their personnel and to have the essential equipment and other items prepared.

During the following 12 hours, further rain, wind, and thundershowers are anticipated in Islamabad, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Pothohar area, Punjab, east/northeast Balochistan, and Sindh.

Nevertheless, at that time, isolated heavy precipitation is also predicted for northeast Punjab, Islamabad, the Potohar area, Kashmir, higher Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeast Balochistan, and central and lower Sindh.

At least 50 people, including eight children, have perished in a variety of rain-related accidents as Pakistan is being pounded by intense monsoon rains, authorities said on Friday.

Monsoon winds bring rains to South Asia every year between June and September, making about 70% to 80% of the region's yearly precipitation.

For the area, these monsoon rains are a mixed gift.

On the one hand, they are essential for the livelihoods of numerous farmers and the security of the food supply in a region with almost two billion people. However, they can bring floods and landslides.

According to a National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) official speaking to AFP, "Fifty deaths have been reported in different rain-related incidents all over Pakistan since the start of the monsoon on June 25," adding that 87 others were injured during this time.
