England fights the weather to maintain its Ashes aspirations.

 Depending on the weather on day 5, England's prospects of preserving their Ashes dream are uncertain.

The show was in danger of being completely washed out when the fourth day began. A brief window of dry weather offered some optimism, allowing for 30 overs of play at Old Trafford starting at 14:45 BST.

The pursuit of wickets by England was difficult because of Labuschagne's outstanding resiliency. In only his second overseas Test century, the Australian batsman formed a laborious 103-run stand with Mitchell Marsh.

England looked to their skipper Joe Root's off-breaks for ideas as the day became shorter. Jonny Bairstow caught Labuschagne behind the defence for the crucial wicket, showcasing Root's surprise bowling power.

Rain, however, cut short the planned tea break and prevented any more play for the day. Australia finished the day at 214-5 and was 61 runs behind England. Cameron Green was in the bowling position with three runs, while Marsh was undefeated on 31.

Now that the series is tied at 2-2, England's hopes of winning this Test and squaring the series depend on the weather on the last day. But with further inclement weather predicted, England has the task of finding enough time to push for victory and maybe set up an exciting series finale at The Oval.

Australia's situation is advantageous despite the decreasing likelihood of winning the coveted Ashes urn; a drawn match would be sufficient.

On the other hand, England's seamers had trouble establishing contact with a rigid surface. The frustrations experienced by England were exacerbated by rain interruptions and Labuschagne's tenacious alliance with Marsh. Joe Root, though, stood out as the star bowler, giving England some hope with his off-breaks and taking the vital wicket of Labuschagne.

As the last day draws near, England is still hoping for ideal weather to increase their chances of winning, while Australia wants to solidify their position and prevent England from winning the series.
