In an unidentified area on July 7, 2023, soldiers load 155mm Base Burn Dual Purpose Improved Conventional Munition rounds onto their trucks.

The US has verified that Ukraine is successfully utilising cluster bombs it received from the US to combat Russian soldiers there.

According to John Kirby, the spokesperson for national security at the White House, the cluster munitions are having an effect on Russian defensive operations and locations.

across 100 countries have outlawed cluster bombs, which disperse many bomblets across a large region and pose a serious hazard to people.

The US decided to provide these weapons despite the controversy surrounding their deployment in order to increase Ukraine's ammo supplies for its summer counteroffensive. According to Ukraine, cluster bombs will only be used to disperse groups of Russian enemy forces.
During a news briefing on Thursday, Kirby stated, "We have heard some initial response from the Ukrainians, and they're employing them fairly well.

They are utilising them properly, according to Kirby. They are efficiently being used, and they are having an effect on Russia's defensive formations and tactical manoeuvres. I believe I can end it there.

With Russia attacking Ukrainian ports and threatening ships, the situation has considerably worsened. The international grain markets have also been shaken by Moscow's pullout from a UN-mediated agreement to let Ukraine to export grains, driving up worldwide prices.
Major humanitarian repercussions stem from the deployment of cluster bombs and the increasing war in the Black Sea. The assaults on Ukrainian ports were sharply denounced by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who also issued a warning that the damage of civilian infrastructure may be illegal under international humanitarian law.

The US has voiced fear that Moscow would attack civilian vessels in retaliation to Russia's assertive approach. The Black Sea was deemed risky in some areas, and any ships sailing into Ukrainian seas were warned that they may be armed.
The use of cluster bombs by Ukraine complicates an already difficult situation, and its effects are seen well beyond its boundaries. Major grain importers in the Middle East and North Africa are keeping a careful eye on the situation as the fighting continues.
