In the EIU 2023 Index, Karachi, the financial hub of Pakistan, is once again ranked among the least livable cities.

KARACHI — The main city and financial centre of Pakistan, Karachi, has once again been included on a sobering list of the least habitable cities in the world.

The capital of Sindh came in at 169th out of a total of 173 cities in the Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Livability Index 2023, placing it ahead of only very impoverished towns like Lagos, Algiers, Tripoli, and Damascus.

With a population of nearly 18 million, the city did poorly across the board, earning a score of 42.5—below average.

The post-Covid recovery, stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure were among the variables used by the EIU index to classify cities. The livability factor is evaluated by the Global Livability Index 2023 on a scale of 1 to 100, where 1 is regarded unbearable and 100 is judged to be The port city only received a score of 20 on the stability index, which was poor performance. The provincial capital received a score of 50 in the healthcare category, 75 in education, 51.8 in infrastructure, and 38.7 in culture.

Karachi was listed as 140th out of 140 cities in the ranking the year before.

Austria's capital Vienna, which received a perfect score of 100 on four of the five categories, took first place for the second consecutive year.


Other top cities in the Index were Copenhagen, Melbourne, Sydney, Vancouver, Zurich, Calgary, Geneva, Toronto, and Osaka.
