KARACHI - District Jail Lahore has started a trailblazing trial project that would revolutionise convicts' ability to communicate by offering a video calling option. With the help of this creative strategy, inmates may close the distance between them and their loved ones, changing their perception of separation.
100 adolescent inmates who have not reached maturity have been given the chance to communicate with their families via video chats twice a week thanks to the recently introduced video-calling technology. This programme, started by Additional Chief Secretary for Housing Shakeel Ahmad Mian, demonstrates how committed the government is to the wellbeing of prisoners.
This programme marks a substantial advance in improving prisoner wellbeing by encouraging a sense of community and support while they are incarcerated. It's noteworthy that this is the first time in the nation's history that inmates have had access to such a communication tool.
Regarding the beneficial effects of video calling on inmates' general mental and emotional health, the Inspector General of Jails has voiced hope. Plans are already in motion to introduce video calling services to more jails in Punjab, buoyed by the success of this trial initiative.
The interim chief minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, presided over a meeting in his office in April 2023 to discuss jail reforms, with a focus on the idea of holding inmates' trials through video hookups. This represents a dedication to using technology to better the criminal justice system.
