The head of Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said on Saturday that unarmed Wagner private military contractors had infiltrated Rostov-on-Don in the region's south and taken over the Southern Military Headquarters.

"We took control of the headquarters building without firing a shot. We haven't interfered with anyone's job, Prigozhin wrote in a Telegram post.

"Why does the nation back us? Considering that we marched in justice. We were under artillery and helicopter attack from the outset, but we managed to escape unharmed. We didn't even touch one conscript. Along the way, we didn't murder a single person, said Prigozhin.

The Southern Military District's headquarters, according to Russian official media, was the scene of numerous gunfire and an explosion.

Senior Russian-appointed official in the occupied territory of Ukraine, Vladimir Rogov, stated on Telegram: "The sounds of explosions and shooting at the headquarters of the Southern Military District, most likely, were either a firecracker or an explosive package, they (Wagner) blew it up to scare civilians away from the cordon zone."

Rogov said that the cordoned-off headquarters had been ordered to be 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) away from the civilian population.

The first Chechen special forces units had been sighted in Rostov, said to Rogov, and they had been "transferred to suppress the rebellion."

Rostov-bound Chechen battalions have not been independently verified.
