'Excessive hostility' was directed against Brittney Griner at the Dallas airport. WNBA and Mercury reply.

After Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner experienced "excessive harassment" at a Dallas airport on Saturday, a number of WNBA players are urging the league to do more to ensure player safety when travelling.

An "inappropriate and unfortunate" altercation took place when the Mercury were making their way from Dallas to Indianapolis early on Saturday after losing to the Dallas Wings 90-77 on Friday, according to the league.

Brianna Turner, a forward for the Phoenix, claimed that individuals were filming the Mercury while yelling "wild remarks" at them. Turner described the situation on Twitter: "Our team nervously huddled in a corner unsure of how to move about."

According to the WNBA, the event "was orchestrated by a social media figure and provocateur" who targeted Griner, the six-time All-Star who was held for nearly ten months.
