Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's Tech-enhanced Golf League Unveils Its First Team.
With the PGA Tour's unexpected merger with LIV Golf on Tuesday, this week in golf has been news-filled. The Los Angeles Golf Club joined the Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's tech-infused golf league, TGL, on Thursday, adding to an already hectic week.
Serena and Venus Williams, Serena's husband Alexis Ohanian, and Serena's 5-year-old daughter Olympia Ohanian are the team's owners. In collaboration with the PGA Tour, Woods and McIlroy established the league in August of last year. With six three-person teams, competition is anticipated to start in January.
"Our TGL team has found the ideal home in Los Angeles. This city epitomises the meeting point of sports, technology, and entertainment, making it the perfect setting for the innovation and excitement we hope to bring to the golf industry and its followers, according to a statement from Alexis Ohanian. "We see enormous opportunities to use technology to bring golf to its fans and to provide an immersive and interactive experience that will enthral both seasoned golf enthusiasts and new fans," the company said.
18 PGA Tour golfers will compete in the new league's virtual golf competition. There will be 15 regular season games in addition to the playoff round. On Monday nights, a "data-rich virtual course" in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, is slated to host the two-hour, 18-hole contests, according to ESPN. The TGL places a high priority on the fan experience, which includes permitting spectators to sit on the green side of the field during games.
There are 12 players who have signed up for the league, including Woods and McIlroy. Rickie Fowler, Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Matt Fitzpatrick, Adam Scott, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose, Max Homa, and Billy Horschel are among the other competitors.
