In rural Karnataka, Southern India, Rupesh was a small-holder farmer. He was married to Neelam, with whom he had four children. He had debts to middlemen who would profit from his fresh product. He engaged three more workers seasonally and four labourers permanently. More than five households were supported by the little farm as a whole. Due to the warm weather, they produced potatoes as most of their contemporaries did, but the land had been deteriorating since the wells were drying up more quickly each year.
