Statistics on gun violence are at all-time highs before the Fourth of July holiday.

Over the previous ten years, there have been an average of five mass shootings on Independence Day in the United States, more than on any other day of the year.

According to a study of data from the Gun Violence Archive conducted by Boston-based researcher James Alan Fox of Northeastern University, there have been more than 50 shootings throughout that time in which four or more persons were shot on July 4th.

Seven people were killed and up to 50 others were injured when a semiautomatic rifle-wielding shooter opened fire on a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, last year from a rooftop. Tuesday is set aside for a memorial service and a sombre march along the parade route without any floats or entertainment.
